From majestic orchids to ancient trees, these iconic flora are not only symbols of biodiversity but also cultural treasures. If you’re a nature enthusiast, here are five iconic Borneo flora you definitely need to know!
1. Rafflesia
Known as the largest flower in the world, Rafflesia is a true marvel. It can reach up to 1 meter in diameter and emits a strong odour to attract pollinators. Although rare, it can be spotted in the rainforests of Sabah and Sarawak.
2. Nepenthes (Tropical Pitcher Plant)
These carnivorous plants are famous for their unique pitcher-shaped leaves that trap insects. Borneo is home to over 30 species of Nepenthes, including some endemic to Malaysian Borneo.
3. Orchid Vanda dearei
Often called the “Queen of Borneo Orchids,” Vanda dearei is a stunning yellow orchid native to the lowland forests of Borneo. Its exotic beauty has made it a favourite among orchid collectors and botanists.
4. Belian (Borneo Ironwood)
This hardwood tree is highly valued for its durability and resistance to termites. Traditionally used in local architecture, Belian is considered sacred and is now protected due to its endangered status.
5. Ginger Etlingera elatior (Torch Ginger)
A common sight in Malaysian cuisine and gardens, the Torch Ginger is not just visually striking but also aromatic and edible. Its bright red blooms are a symbol of tropical elegance.
These species will be among the many flora highlighted during the Borneo Flora Festival 2025 (BFF 2025) — a vibrant celebration of Borneo’s unique biodiversity. Happening at the Labuan International Sea Sports Complex (Kompleks Sukan Laut Antarabangsa Labuan), this event promises floral exhibitions, eco-education booths, and cultural showcases.
